This week, on Grey's Anatomy

Hi, my name is Gwen and I'm a TV-aholic.

"Hi, Gwen."

Mostly my dramatic tastes run with police procedurals (I've seen every single episode of the original Law & Order and SVU), and the legal/medical/firefighter melodramas. I stuck with ER until the very end; LA Law and The Practice were appointment television; more recently I'm digging 9-1-1.

So as you might imagine, Shondaland is my jam. If you don't know what that means, keep reading anyway.

Grey's Anatomy is in its 15th season. I've watched from the beginning. I suffered through Izzie and Denny Duquette, I've watched Bailey mellow with age while still maintaining her badass-ness, I've witnessed Alex's transformation into a pediatric surgeon with a heart, and on and on. Personally, I was ready for Grey's to wrap it up at the end of season 11. If you watch, you know what I'm talking about.

But I just can't quit it.

And last night's episode reminded me why.

Before I go any further, two things:

If you haven't yet watched this episode and you're planning to, come back later. And, trigger warning for sexual assault. I'm not the kind of person who needs trigger warnings, but I can appreciate that some people do.

The March 28th episode of Grey's Anatomy, titled "Silent All These Years," focused on a female patient who arrives at the hospital with a cut on her cheek. Dr. Jo Karev offers to take her to the emergency department and soon realizes that there's much more going on. Jo is herself a survivor of domestic abuse and suspects the same with the patient, Abby. As it turns out, Abby's husband is out of town and she was violently raped by a stranger the night before.

Abby feels safe with Jo and begs her not to leave her side. She also gets terribly upset when she sees any male staff. Eventually she allows Jo and two other female doctors to do a rape kit because she needs surgery and once they sterilize her, any evidence will be destroyed.

As Jo talks to Abby, she tells her over and over that the rape wasn't her fault. She also talks about her own past and how she felt that it was her fault when her husband would beat her. And of course Abby says to her, "it wasn't your fault." How easy it is for us to tell someone else that but not be able to see it for ourselves.

Juxtaposed with this, we see Jo in the near past, knocking on the door of her birth mother's house. Jo was left at a fire station as a baby and bounced around foster homes. She wanted to know where she came from, and she discovers that she was the result of a rape. Her birth mother blamed herself because she had said yes to a date. And in another subplot, Bailey and Ben are faced with their teenage son dating and Ben gives him the talk about consent. (Thank you for showing this very important piece of prevention.)

The most powerful scene is when Abby needs to be taken to an operating room. She's terrified to leave the safety of the exam room she's been in, so Jo arranges for all of the female staff, without knowing why, to line the hallway while Abby is wheeled to surgery. (Music has always been an important part of Grey's Anatomy and in this episode in particular the music is so fitting.)

Here's my reason for writing this post: it is infuriating to me that in 2019 women still blame themselves for being assaulted. And the reason they do is because in many cases they ARE blamed. "What were you wearing?" "How much had you had to drink?" "Were you flirting?" This way of thinking is such bullshit and for real makes me want to burn down the patriarchy.

I've written about this before (see: Standing with the Stanford Survivor, among others) and it makes me angry and sad that I'll probably have to write about it again.

Rape is never ever ever the victim's fault. Ever.

So no, I can't quit Grey's, and I won't. Shonda Rimes, you have a fan for life. Camilla Luddington (Jo) and Khaililah Joi (Abby), I am in awe of you. And a special shout out to Debbie Allen who directed the episode, whom I have adored since Fame. As difficult as it is, I'll be watching "Silent All These Years" again.

Thursday Thoughts

Once again, I'm borrowing from Steph for Thursday Thoughts and just like last time, she didn't do them today. Ah, well...

I’m late posting because we currently don't have internet at home. There are houses under construction next to us and last week the builders cut our cable. For TV watching, that's OK because we have satellite (believe me, if I were without TV you'd hear me yelling no matter how far away you are). However, it does affect our internet service, and it seems that now the earliest it will be fixed is next Gwensday. This seriously blows. So I've had to go to the office to work instead of being able to work from home, and blogging gets squeezed in as time allows.

I saw this meme awhile ago and sent it to Aaron. The note says "I've already fed him, don't fall for his bullshit." Our cats pull this all the time and last night they totally punked me. I started to feed them and Aaron stopped me just in time because he had already fed them. Bastards.

I can’t believe I'm about to talk about Justin Bieber, but his song "What Do You Mean" is all over pop radio. Does anyone else think this is date rape about to happen? "What do you mean / when you nod your head yes / but you wanna say no..." Memo to the Biebs: No means no.

Damn you, Days of Our Lives, for sucking me back into your vortex. I had heard that Peter Reckell (Bo Brady, for those who don't know) was coming back to the show and I tuned in one day and now I'm hooked again. #boandhope4ever My new obsession probably won't last long because ... well, if you could see everything on my DVR just waiting for me to watch it ... But in the meantime I need to find out if Abigail escapes from Ben and has her baby. Don't judge.

Do you watch The Voice? If not, may I suggest you watch this video from Monday night's show. This guy Jordan is amazing and his performance is so moving. After last week's events in Paris and all the hatred being spewed on social media, I really needed this.

I can't really follow that.

Friday Frivolity

New year, new planner that I won't use. I have eternal optimism that I'll get my act together and actually use a planner for more than a week.

This year I went with the blogger-endorsed Erin Condren planner.

Look how cute it is!

Do y'all have the ION Television channel? It's my late-at-night-can't-sleep-due-to-snoring-husband-and/or-crowding-cats channel. They show reruns of some of my favorite crime dramas and they just started Cold Case from the beginning. I loved Lilly Rush and her band of homicide detectives solving open cases - some as old as 1919, some more recent. I miss that show.

I didn't share this next bit of news in my year-end post because I wasn't sure if it was public yet, but now it is and I can announce that our niece Jackie got engaged on Christmas! For those who aren't on my personal Facebook page, here's the family photo, including her fiancĂ© Dameon (far left).

I haven't posted a karaoke playlist in a while, but rest assured, I'm still singing! Here's what I sang Tuesday night.

Finally, Happy Birthday to my friend Amy. Aaron has three best friends from high school and fortunately all the wives are friends as well. I'm so happy that Amy and Mike now live here in Columbus (a mere 10-minute walk away)!

Have a great weekend and stay warm!

How I Keep Myself Occupied During Recovery

I'm going to be brutally honest here. A lot of people who undergo major surgery talk about how stir-crazy they get. The resting is too hard for them. They can't sit still.

I am not one of those people.

My surgeon told me to be "lazy but active." I have the lazy part down pat. The active part, right now at least, consists of walks around the block. On Tuesday, still riding the high of having the drains removed, I may have walked a little too far, but generally speaking, there's not much danger of me overdoing.

If you've been around here for any length of time, you know I'm a TV junkie. Here are some of the shows I've been catching up on for the past two weeks.

The Fosters (ABC Family) - I hadn't watched this but the second season started this week. I binge-watched Season 1 and finished in time to watch the Season 2 premiere on Monday. It's about an interracial lesbian couple who have a biological son and take in foster kids (and their last name is Foster - how convenient) and eventually adopt them.

Source

Orange is the New Black (Netflix) - It's cliché but yes, I'm hooked on this show just like a gazillion other people. I decided it was so nice of Netflix to time the release of Season 2 with my recovery time. And if, like me, you've seen every single episode of all the Law & Order franchises, you must check out this rundown of nearly all the OITNB characters and what parts they played on L&O.

Source

Also, OITNB is the source of one of my new favorite quotes:

“Prison is gluten. Don’t do the crime if you can’t fuckin’ have flour.”

Longmire (A&E) - As you can tell from my L&O obsession, I'm a fanatic about crime dramas and I'll give just about any of them a chance (which reminds me that I need to add Castle to my watching list). This is about a sheriff in Wyoming who doesn't believe in using a cell phone or any other modern technology. I had watched most of the first season when it first started but then it fell off my radar. Season 3 started earlier this month so again I binge-watched until I was caught up.

Source

Royal Pains (USA) - This is another one that I used to watch regularly but then life got in the way, along with other shows, so I had quite a bit to watch to be ready for the new season, which started last week. I did, however, decide that perhaps I should have reconsidered watching this show while recovering from surgery.

I'd take those orders.
Source

Switched at Birth (ABC Family) - I'm still catching up on this one. The title speaks for itself (two girls switched at birth find out about each other when they're 16) and the twist is that one of them is deaf. Warning: you can't multitask while watching this show because there's a lot of sign language and subtitles.

Source

Petals on the Wind (Lifetime) - Yes, I devoured VC Andrews' books back in the day. This TV movie aired in late May, but I purposely waited to watch it until after my surgery. It did not disappoint: deliciously trashy, a well-cast Cathy, and the awesome Ellen Burstyn who stole every scene she was in. Loved it.

Source

Next up, I plan to catch up on Pretty Little Liars, which leads me to a confession that I probably enjoy ABC Family's shows more than a 46-year-old should. Oh, well...

Note that this is just a TV list; come back later for the movie version.

Time keeps on slippin'.....

Here's how I know how fast time is flying: it's already season finale time on TV! What the what? And there have been some doozies. No spoilers here, but if you watch The Blacklist, Scandal, Chicago Fire or Revenge ... holy shitballs!

It's pretty remarkable that I've seen The Blacklist finale already, because it's one of the shows that Aaron and I watch together, which usually means we're weeks behind. But we did a little binge watching and got caught up on that one.

During that marathon, I noticed art imitating life (or the other way around). One of the episodes was about a criminal called the "Kingmaker," who helped politicians by killing off their opponents. Now, this episode was shot and aired way before Monday, but that also happened to be the day that Clay Aiken's opponent in the North Carolina congressional primary died suddenly. Hmmmmm, did Clay hire the Kingmaker?

Source

***Disclaimer: I am not accusing Aiken of anything! And if you go to his website, the only thing you'll find right now is a statement of sympathy and suspension of campaign activities for the time being.

In another "art imitates life" moment, on last week's Good Wife, Alicia defended a business mogul (Tom Skerritt) who couldn't stop putting his foot in his mouth, reminiscent of the recent shenanigans of one Donald Sterling, owner of the LA Clippers. What a tool.

You all know I have a TV obsession, and so do a couple other bloggers I read. Jana at The Townhouse Pioneer recently wrote about multitasking while watching TV (I'm doing it right now) and Christina at Easily Entertained has posts this week about the network Upfronts, when next season's lineups are announced.

----------------------------

This week in breast cancer, meet my new friend:

I officially apologize to anyone I may have made fun of for experiencing hot flashes. They seriously suck. (I've been thrust into menopause because I can't take hormones anymore due to my diagnosis.)

This past winter, during the polar vortex bullshit, I spent most of my time in front of this:

Why can't we make this happen?

And if anyone DOES make it happen, I expect royalties.

Another thing cancer fucked up: I could be in Australia right now. I had the opportunity to go to Melbourne with a friend but I ultimately decided that I didn't want to be so far away from home and Aaron for so long. It was the right decision and I don't regret it, but I'm pissed that I had to make it at all.

----------------------------

Meanwhile, last night I rocked it out at karaoke. Besides my usual "Killing Me Softly," I also sang these:

(You kind of have to skip the first 90 seconds of "All That Jazz."

A Bunch of Thursday Randomness

Let's talk snow. Yes, it's winter. Yes, it snows in winter. But we rarely get THAT much snow at one time here in Columbus. The official snowfall for Tuesday night/Gwensday morning was 10.7 inches. We didn't have quite that much in the city but it was more than six inches for sure and on top of that we got freezing rain. Aaron shoveled for two hours before caving and borrowing a friend's snowblower.

Here's the thing, don't be a damn hero. If you don't have to go anywhere, stay home. Simple as that. I'm telling you, the roads are shitastic and while I'm missing my 4WD vehicle right about now, even that doesn't guarantee you won't go slip sliding away. And I get it, the schools have been closed a lot this winter and that's a bitch for parents who have to scramble to find childcare for the younger kids, but I think it's hilarious when parents who have no problem taking their kids out of school for a vacation complain that snow days are hindering their children's education.

someecards.com - When I was your age we had to walk uphill to school in the snow both ways and would pray the horse would shit so we'd have something warm to stand in.
No you did not. Shut up.

Do you watch The Biggest Loser? I don't, but I've seen a lot about the controversy surrounding the latest winner and "did she go too far?" I'll admit that she looks quite thin and apparently her BMI is slightly below "healthy," but I have two problems here. 1) I wonder if people would be as up in arms had it been a man in the same set of facts. 2) People, please. There is nothing healthy about the format of this show. I saw a tweet from someone who said she watched the finale with her teenage daughters and she was disgusted. Sorry, but why are you watching with your teenage daughters at all? This extreme weight loss is unrealistic and can be dangerous, whether or not the winner appears "emaciated."

I didn't manage to post yesterday but I do have Tuesday's karaoke playlist. We had a great time watching the snow and even Aaron sang.

In that picture he's singing Harry Connick, Jr.'s "Where or When." He also sang Van Halen's "Ice Cream Man" and Snoop Dogg's "Gin and Juice." Here's mine:

On "If I Had You," Aaron played air piano. Haha!

Breaking News

No, I don't actually HAVE breaking news, but this post is about some things that confuse me and it involves "breaking news."

So yesterday I was watching Ellen. In Columbus, it airs at 4:00. The local news on that station comes on at 5:00 and is then on for 90 minutes. Yesterday was also the day that Ohio State formally announced their new president. I say "formally" because of course the news was out the night before so this wasn't a big surprise. And it certainly wasn't the Breaking News that Channel 4 declared it to be. I mean, I get it that this is a big deal for some people, but you couldn't have waited until 5:00?

Of course, the more nationwide "breaking news" bullshit that happened recently was when Andrea Mitchell was forced to interrupt an interview about the NSA to report on Justin Bieber's arraignment. WTF? And just in case for some reason you haven't seen it, here it is:

This got me thinking about a couple other things that I just don't get.

Head-in parking

This isn't the first time I've seen this, so I seriously Googled "head-in parking" to make sure that it meant what I thought it meant. Can anyone explain this to me?

Age ratings on TV

Am I crazy? Don't you read "iffy for 14+" to mean that only people UNDER 14 should watch the show? Obviously that makes no sense, and it makes my brain hurt.

This next picture is the opposite of not making sense. You may have seen this picture on my Instagram, but it bears sharing again. Gwensday was Yahtzee night in the 'hood at Angie's house. Instead of buying ice to cool the beer and white wine, she did this:

Brilliant, don't you think? Finally, something good about winter!

Linking up for Friday Favorites, even though only one of the above items qualifies as a Favorite.

Golden Globes and Other Weekend Stuff

Such a lovely weekend! Friday night we went to Mike & Amy's (you know, our friends who recently moved here from Atlanta; Mike & Aaron have been friends since they were 12, yada yada yada) for dinner. We enjoyed an outstanding meal and a bit of wine, including a bottle of Sting's wine:

I think I decided it was time to leave when this happened:

Nah, that's just how they are.

Saturday we saw American Hustle. This led to the realization that we should not drink beers before going to the movies. Between that and the warm temperature in the theater, we were both dozing off. We think we liked the movie, though. I can definitely say that the acting is terrific and I loved the soundtrack as well.

OK, let's get to the Golden Globes. I watched them on delay so I avoided all social media last night. I adore Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (congrats to Amy for her win!) and I thought Tina looked spectacular, especially in that first wine-colored gown (but her red carpet gown was hideous). I think the only part with them that I didn't like was the whole "this is my son Randy" thing. Awkward.

I liked that there were some surprises, although the surprises of Andy Samberg and Brooklyn Nine-Nine just baffle me. I watch the show, but I don't know that it's worthy of beating the competition in those categories.

I haven't seen any of the "big" movies except for American Hustle so I don't have a lot to say about the winners there, but Leo and Matthew's wins could shake things up in the Best Actor category for the Oscars. That category appears to be loaded so I'm curious to see who gets nominated.

How to appear drunk but hilarious and fun: see Emma Thompson.

How to appear drunk but a big hot mess: see Jacqueline Bisset.

Some of my best dressed:

Picture 1 via; Pictures 2 - 4 via
Reese Witherspoon. I don't care what anyone says (and honestly I don't know what anyone's saying about her), I love this dress. It's simple, it looks great on her and I adore the color.

Lupita Nyong'o. I know 12 Years a Slave is going to be hard to watch, but I'm excited to see her performance, and she is just stunning in this dress. And probably in a burlap sack as well.

Olivia Wilde. She wins the pregnant chicks fashion award of the evening.

Uma Thurman. She made E! Online's "worst dressed" and her red carpet picture isn't great but I thought that onstage last night she looked fabulous.

Some of my worst dressed:

Picture 1 | Picture 2 | Picture 3 | Picture 4

Amy Adams. How clever of her to dress like her character. But, no. I just don't think this does anything for her. And onstage she looked totally washed out, as though she had zero makeup on.

Lena Dunham. This just speaks for itself.

Jennifer Lawrence. I still love her, but this dress? Ugh.

Edie Falco. The cut, the fabric, everything. Hate it.

In other news, after a lot of binge watching on Amazon Prime, I'm finally completely caught up on Downton Abbey (the American showing of it, of course). I won't spoil anything from last night's episode except to say, "Holy SHIT," but I'd love to chat about it with you.

A Few of My Favorite Things - 2013

If my friend Steph is hosting a linkup, I'm in (unless it's about cleaning and organizing...or recipes). But today is all about favorite things of 2013. And -- how convenient! -- Helene is doing a linkup of best songs of 2013 so I can kill two birds with one stone.

Television
(These are only new or new-to-me shows.)
  • The Blacklist (NBC)
  • The Newsroom (HBO)
  • Homeland (Showtime)
  • The Americans (FX)
  • Witches of East End (Lifetime) - this one is a total guilty pleasure!

Movies
(I haven't seen many movies lately; I usually wait until January to do a lot of that.)
  • Argo
  • Lincoln
  • 42
  • Girl Rising
  • Enough Said

Books
(This is pathetic. I was a bad book reader this year, and it's funny that two of the three are non-fiction, which I rarely read. I'm not a resolution makER but I think I'll have to resolve to read more.)
  • Recipe for Joy - by my friend Robin Davis
  • Reconstructing Amelia - by Kimberly McCreight
  • I Am Malala - by Malala Yousafszai

Music
(Again, some of these aren't new to 2013, but that's when I became obsessed with them.)
  • "Same Love" - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
  • "Brave" - Sara Bareilles
  • "Bottom of the River" - Delta Rae
  • "Wings" - Little Mix
  • "Sure on This Shining Night" - Conspirare
  • "Next to Me" - Emeli Sande
  • "Some Nights" - Fun
  • Wake Me Up" - Avicii
  • "This Kind of Love" - Sister Hazel
  • "It's Time" - Imagine Dragons
  • "No Day But Today" - Idina Menzel

Personal
  • I started my new job after working at my previous job for 16 years.
  • We welcomed some brand new framily members: Rylie, Cooper and Lauren!
  • This was the year that I put more into my blog, which allowed me to meet new friends. And I even got to meet two in person when I visited Steph in November!
Steph, Brie, Me, Marla
  • We went to Europe on a choir tour with some of our best friends, and I gained a new close friend, Kat.

A lot of people close to me had some shitty things happen this year, so I'm grateful to look at the positives of 2013. I hope you all had some favorite things during the year. Happy Gwensday!

That's What She Read
