Ranting on Gwensday

Day 22's prompt is Rant about something. Get up on your soapbox and tell us how you really feel.

I've been pondering this one. I have plenty of pet peeves, lots of things that annoy me, and I've been on my soapbox about serious issues as well. But I don't feel like being super serious today so before I start the rant, I have a confession:

I am a grammar snob.

I'm not saying that every sentence I write is perfect and I know typos happen (even to me), but it amazes me how little is thought of spelling and grammar. It's one thing to make errors on your personal blog or a silly Facebook post, but when I read published articles with misspelled words or poor grammar I want to scream. And don't get me started on menus at restaurants (I recently saw a menu for a supposed Italian restaurant that misspelled "prosciutto" and "scallopini.") Really?

Today's rant specifically targets e-cards. I love a good e-card. I saved this one recently:

However, I clearly can't share it because the period is outside the quotation marks. I can live with the partial sentence "You in?" but that damn punctuation will drive me nuts.

This is how I often feel:

My absolute favorites though, are the e-cards that rant about poor grammar but are also guilty of it. Observe:

There are at least three things wrong with that card. Please, just put on the dunce cap yourself. Thanks.

And now you can look back through my post and find any mistakes I've made. ;)

Confessions of a Gila Monster

  1. I make a distinction between grammar and spelling mistakes I just didn't catch and those where I find the rules to be just stupid. Those, I choose to ignore on purpose.

I'm not sure where that puts me on your grammar shit-list. ;)

  2. I hear you on the stupid rules thing. Sometimes I just don't care, but mostly I can't help myself!

  3. And why are Wine and Yoga randomly capitalized?

  4. Syl, I wondered that too. I mean if "pants" were also capitalized, it would at least be consistent...

  5. We have so much in common :) I know I don't always speak/type perfectly, but GOODNESS! Some of the stuff people write (and on ecards) just drives me up a wall, lol!

  6. I hate caps for no reason. And misuse of punctuation in and around quotation marks.

  7. LOL, my poor grammar must make you and SMD twitchy! I have post-ts around my monitor with grammar do's and dont's.

I do refuse to post any someecard that has some type of mistake. My thing is there, they're and their.

It does make me angry to see blogs of so-called "social media professionals" who have some of the worst use of grammar and punctuation I ever seen. (ha! seen!)

  8. I can be guilty of this crime at times as well. I'm not as good in the grammar department as I'd like to be, but spelling mistakes drive me up a wall. I can't even take things seriously at work when there are spelling mistakes! Also, when people can't differentiate between your and you're, their, they're and there, or than and then!
