Showin' My Books - October '17

I mentioned the other day that I'm in the midst of several books at once. I'm having trouble finishing books, not necessarily because I don't like them, but ... I don't know why. But I do have a few books to talk about on the 3rd anniversary of Steph and Jana's Show Us Your Books linkup.

Life According to Steph

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah - SO many people raved about this book and I'm thrilled that it lived up to my expectations. My IRL book club read this and it's one that most all of us really enjoyed. I need more Kristin Hannah in my life, but spread out, because there's some heartbreaking stuff in there.

One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus - I very much enjoyed this book about five high school seniors who wind up in detention but only four make it out alive. There's a lot of Breakfast Club-ness going on here (except for the murder, of course). It's told from the perspectives of the four survivors and I loved the character development, and the need to keep reading at the end of every chapter.

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman - Before I read this for book club, it seemed like everyone adored it. So I felt like a loser because I just wasn't feeling it. After I gave it 2 stars on Goodreads, I felt validated because other people told me they didn't like it either. If you're in the "loved it" camp, that's cool; it just wasn't for me.

What are you reading?

Stay tuned,

  1. I'm curious about A Man Called Ove, but it's all good that you didn't like it. I really didn't like Girl on the Train, which most people love. lol

I DO really want to read One of Us is Lying though.

  6. I'm so glad that you loved The Nightingale! Kristin Hannah books definitely are tough to read, but they're so good. I need to pick up another one by her soon. One Of Us Is Lying sounds like a really good read. I'm going to add that to my list!

  7. I also feel weird whenever I dislike a book that everyone loved and wonder what I missed. But we all like what we like and don't like! I have not read Ove yet. He's in my TBR and so is One of Us is Lying. And I loved The Nightingale. It broke my heart a bit too.

  8. The Nightingale is an amazing book! One like it is The Lilac Girls, and Sarah's Key, same subject, both heartbreaking.

  11. I felt that way about Big Little Lies. People rave about it, but I just didn't feel it. I trudged through it because I had to know how it ended, but I was just meh the whole time.

  13. I want to read the first two! One of Us is Lying sounds great. I love the breakfast club and find the idea that it's similar but different to be really cool. I liked Ove, but I can see why it is not for everyone. It just had me cracking up at his comparisons and Ove's interactions with other people. LOL Xo - Alexandra

  14. I think you may be the only reader who read Resurrection Bay by Emma Viskic after I raved about it, and from my recollection, you enjoyed it too. The second book is out and I just finished it. It was a great second book. Get on it! :)

  15. I couldn't get past the first 50 pages of A Man Called Ove and DNF. Just wasn't feeling it. I like your "Breakfast Club-ness" description on One Of Us Is Lying haha. It's on my Kindle, but sounds like I need to move it up!
