Showin' My Books - January '17

Time to link up and talk books!

Life According to Steph

Scrappy Little Nobody by Anna Kendrick (audiobook, read by the author) - I'm a fan, to be sure, and I enjoyed this. I literally laughed out loud several times. There's nothing really juicy or scandalous; it's just a fun listen.

The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison (audiobook) - This book is messed up, but I liked it. I really appreciated the audio version, as they used a male voice for the FBI agent and a female voice for the survivor being interviewed. The twist was kind of anti-climactic for me but overall it was good in that twisted, creepy, disturbing way.

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch - I read this for my real-life book club and I know a lot of my fellow bloggers had this on their best of 2016 lists, but it just didn't do it for me. I kept going with it because I was interested in the story and what would happen with Jason, but eventually I got so confused that I didn't much care anymore. Unlike The Martian, with this one I couldn't get past the science-y stuff.

Every Little Kiss by Susan Hatler - After Dark Matter I needed some total chick lit. I found out about this book from Bookbub and I think it was free on Amazon. It was pretty predictable but it served its purpose. It's the first in a series and I could maybe see myself reading another one when I need some book candy.

What's on your bookshelf lately?

  1. Chick lit is a great break sometimes... I'm in need of that right about now! I want to read both The Butterfly Garden and Dark Matter. Bummer about the confusion for you on the last one. Sometimes that's how it goes! XO - Alexandra

  4. I just bought The Butterfly Garden on Amazon. My library didn't carry it but it was on sale for $2 and I couldn't resist it. :D It's been getting rave reviews and creepy is right up my alley, although I'm not sure what that says about me! LOL! Dark Matter is on my TBR. I'm hoping it reads more like The Martian for me, otherwise the science stuff will really bore and confuse me. But I liked Crouch's series The Pines, so fingers crossed.

  5. i definitely agree about the twist being anti climatic for the butterfly garden, but i still enjoyed the book overall. sucks about dark matter, i definitely thought the science was harder to understand in this one compared to the martian, but i just let it go in one ear and out the other (or eye, since i was reading lol).

  6. I am sad you didn't enjoy Dark Matter, but I feel like I'm the only one who gives zero fucks about Anna Kendrick's book so I guess we're even.

  8. I'm curious about Dark Matter but I'm not a HUGE sci-fi person, so I'm not really sure what I'll think. I DO want to read Scrappy Little Nobody though. Love Anna!

  9. Oh, I'm glad to hear another person didn't think Dark Matter was all that great. I didn't mind the science-y stuff, I just thought everything was a bit dull. It feels like the kind of book where the enjoyment comes from the thoughts that it provokes in you, which isn't my type of book, so nah, it wasn't for me.

  10. Oh no. I've got Dark Matter coming up for me pretty soon. I chose it for a category "genre that I rarely read" because I'd heard rave after rave. Well, I'll give it a go and see how I do.

  11. I really liked Dark Matter! I had a hard time getting through The Martian, I wish I pushed through, but I just couldn't...

  12. So many people said the same thing about The Butterfly Garden (it's messed up, but I liked it). Haha! Adding it to my list now! Dark Matter has been on my list for a while, but for some reason I'm not in a hurry to read it.
